Classroom Management Procedures |
Beginning of period procedures:FIRST BELL JOURNAL ACTIVITY- Students will work in their spirals completing the journal assignment on the board. Students are expected to get to work immediately and to work quietly. Once the bell rings, socializing stops. The teacher will check attendance at this time. You should remain quiet out of respect for others, and you should be writing the ENTIRE time. SECOND BELL SILENT READING TIME- Students will read silently in their reading books while the teacher takes status. Students are expected to get to work immediately and to work quietly. Once the bell rings, socializing stops. You should remain quiet out of respect for others, and you should be reading the ENTIRE time. STUDENTS ABSENT FROM THE PREVIOUS DAY- As these students enter the room, they can leave their absence slips in the side container on the file cabinet. I will sign and return these slips during class work. It is your responsibility to make sure you have your slip before you leave. Check the board for missed papers. PROCEDURE: 1. Check the class file for papers returned while you were out. Pick them up and place them in your folder. 2. Pick up your assignment form from the front bookcase. You are responsible for finding, completing, and turning in all assignments listed. Please let me know immediately if there is a problem. 3. Pick up any additional assignments/worksheets from the teacher before class or after class. Ask me if you don’t understand something. 4. Complete the make-up assignments, staple them to the WE MISSED YOU work form, and turn them into your class box. Your assignment will be counted as late work if you forget this step. TARDY STUDENTS- When the tardy student enters the room, he/she must fill out a lunch detention form on one of the clipboards at the door. You are expected to be responsible and follow the system quietly. This allows for the least amount of classroom disruption. EXPECTED STUDENT BEHAVIOR– Students are expected to get to work immediately and to work quietly. Once the bell rings, socializing stops. You should remain quiet if you finish early out of respect for others. Students are expected to listen attentively to the teacher when she is presenting information, directions, or conducting a discussion. No talking is allowed when someone else is talking.
SEATWORK AND INSTRUCTION PROCEDURES:STUDENT ATTENTION- Students are expected to listen attentively to the teacher when she is presenting information, directions, or conducting a discussion. No talking is allowed when someone else is talking. Hands and feet should be still and eyes should be on the speaker. STUDENT PARTICIPATION- ASKING QUESTIONS—Before you ask a question about the assignment, look to see if there are any examples or hints on where to look for help first. Use those problem solving skills! Try to figure out problems for yourself before taking someone else’s answer. CONTRIBUTING TO DISCUSSION—Raise your hand, do not call out answers. Class participation is not limited to volunteers. I want to make sure that everyone has a chance to respond. EXCEPTION TO NO CALL-OUTS RULE—When I want a group response, I will signal by using a cue word (Everyone…) or by putting a cupped hand up to my ear. PARTICIPATION GRADES—Students will receive a participation grade from their journal work. You must have a response for each date journal work was assigned.
SEATWORK PROCEDURES: TALK AMONG STUDENTS- No talking is allowed during assignments, quizzes, or tests. We want to be fair and let everyone have the opportunity to do his/her best work. When you are doing group work or the teacher asks you to help another student, you should whisper. OBTAINING HELP- If you need help or have a question, raise your hand. I will either come to you or ask you to come to my desk one at a time. CONTINUE WORKING! If there are a large number of students that need assistance, or if you prefer to not raise your hand, you may take a book and place it in an upright position and continue to work. GETTING OUT OF YOUR SEAT- Students may sharpen pencils, turn in papers, get supplies, and so forth, only when necessary. Trash can be kept at each student’s desk and discarded at the end of the period. WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED- You may use the remaining time for free reading. You may also redo any assignment for a higher grade. Remember, all grades below 70 must be corrected. TESTING– Absolutely no talking is allowed during quizzes or tests. We want to be fair and let everyone have the opportunity to do his/her best work. If you talk during a test or make noises, you will lose 10 points for each infraction of the rule. Make sure to use a cover sheet during the testing period. When you finish, check your work and turn your test over. You may sit silently and read a reading book while you wait for others to finish.
PROCEDURES FOR GROUP WORKUSE OF MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES– Students should use materials and supplies responsibly. Be sure to put away and properly return any materials at the end of class. ASSIGNMENT OF STUDENTS TO GROUPS- At times, students will be allowed to choose their own groups AS LONG AS TALK IS QUIET AND WORK RELATED. STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND BEHAVIOR- 1. Work with your assigned partner(s). Participate, do your share of the work, and be polite and considerate. 2. Raise your hand for assistance from the teacher. Don’t call out. 3. All talk should be quiet and work related. 4. Stay at your group work stations unless it is necessary for you to get supplies. Don’t wander or return to your desk until the teacher tells you to. 5. Read instructions on the board, overhead, or worksheet, and listen to the teacher’s instructions. 6. When you finish work, check over it to be sure it is complete and neat. If there is extra time, ask the teacher for more instructions. If there are none, read the objectives listed for the day’s lesson. 7. The teacher dismisses the class. The class will not be dismissed until the classroom is clean.
MISCELLANEOUS PROCEDURESANNOUNCEMENTS– Students must remain quiet during announcements to show respect to others and so that everyone can listen to important information. Students should NOT attempt to ask questions or leave their desks at this time. OTHER INTERRUPTIONS– Students must remain quiet out of respect for others. Again, students should NOT attempt to ask questions or leave their desks at this time. Sit quietly with no talking if you have no assignment, read a book, or continue working if you already have an assignment. FIRE AND DISASTER DRILLS– Leave the room quietly and orderly row by row. After returning to the classroom, immediately continue the previously interrupted activity. SMARTBOARD USE– Students may only use the SmartBoard with teacher permission. Use the stylus pens and SmartBoard eraser only. Do not touch the screen with your fingers or your hand. This leaves oils on the screen and causes problems with what you are trying to write on the board.
ACCOUNTABILITY PROCEDURESGRADING SYSTEM– see policies MONITORING CLASSWORK– Student journal work will be checked every day by the teacher and the student. To grade a paper: 1. Use a red grader only! 2. Sign your name at the bottom of the page in red. 3. ONLY mark or circle incorrect answers. Correct answers should be left alone. 4. Count up how many things the student missed, and circle that number in the top right hand corner of the page. COMMUNICATING ASSIGNMENTS-Assignments and objectives will be posted on the chalkboard. It is your responsibility to make sure you have completed everything and that you understand the concepts for the day. STANDARDS FOR FORM AND NEATNESS- Always use pen (black ink) on tests and compositions. You may use college rule or regular rule paper as long as it is easy to read. Appearance counts! Be neat and take pride yourself and in all your work. Always use a heading. You will lose five points if you forget ANY part of it. This is what your heading should include:

OUT-OF-CLASS PROCEDURES:LEAVING THE ROOM- If you have to leave the room during the period for any emergency, you must sign out. You may only sign out two times during a six weeks period, and you must get teacher permission first. If you need to use one of your two passes, hold up two fingers. I will respond with a nod if the time is appropriate, or ask you to wait for a better time. If you get teacher permission, wait for the teacher to sign you out on the red pass. Students must have a pass at all times when in the hallway.
USE OF MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT PROCEDURES:SHARPENING PENCILS– Pencils may be used on rough drafts and journal work. Students must sharpen pencils before the tardy bell rings and during activities in which the teacher is not presenting or instructing the whole class. If students need to sharpen their pencils during seatwork, only one student at a time is allowed at the pencil sharpener. ENCYCLOPEDIAS, DICTIONARIES, AND REFERENCE MATERIALS– Encyclopedias are personal property of the teacher. You must get teacher permission first before using or borrowing them. All books and supplies should be kept orderly and handled in a respectful manner. Do not fold down page corners or mark in the books in any way. Other reference materials may be used during activities in which the teacher is not presenting or instructing the whole class. TEACHER MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT- Students are not allowed to take anything from the teacher’s desk or use teacher’s supplies without permission. Students are not allowed to touch any electrical or computer equipment without permission. Touching teacher computers, projectors, or SmartBoard without permission will result in an automatic D-Hall.
END OF PERIOD PROCEDURES:Don’t worry about putting up early, I’ll give you plenty of time. Before the period ends: · Any room equipment or materials used during class must be put away properly. · Teacher will give announcements and prepare you for the next day. · Teacher dismisses class, not the bell. |
